The first major tax benefit is that your elective contributions are conveniently deducted automatically from your paycheck before you are taxed. In addition, your earnings grow tax-deferred until you withdraw the money. Participants may contribute up to 50% of their compensation on a pre-tax basis through payroll deductions.
